Wild Swimmers should be smart swimmers always but cold water swimming adds a different dimension to a fun swim experience. For new wild swimmers and experienced swimmers alike, I’ve compiled some basic tips for cold water swimming.
• Hypothermia is nasty. Be safe, smart and bring a warm change of clothes for the post-swim.
• Pay Attention to Water Temps: Most swimmers can swim comfortably without a wetsuit in 50 to 60 degree farenheit temperatures. Swim in water cooler than this, you risk hypothermia in a very short time. Prior to your swim, check water temperature and wind chill.
• Pay attention to your energy levels. The cold water will sap your energy. Be aware of how tired and cold you are feeling during your swim. Get out of the water before you reach your maximum exhaustion level.
• Swim with a buddy
• Blowin’ Bubbles: To acclimate your lungs to the cold water, stand in waist deep water and stick your face in. Cold and shocking yes but blow some bubbles in the water to adjust your lungs to the water temperature.
